Skin diseases such as fungal infection, yeast infection are the more common form of infection in dogs. Yeast is found in the skin and mucus membrane of living beings and animals. In dogs, yeast infection is mainly caused by the Candida albicans and malassezia pachydermatis. Candida albicans are found in the digestive tract whereas the fungus malassezia pachydermatis found in the mucus and ear of dogs.

Causes

Yeast infection in dogs mainly occurs due to the poor immune system. Several factors like unhealthy diet, use of antibiotics, diseases like diabetes, thyroid problem, certain allergy, seborrhea weakens the immune system and thus make dogs more susceptible to yeast infection.

Candidiasis is another yeast infection in dogs that is caused by taking grains based diet instead of meat based diet, certain drugs, or chemicals. Antibiotics or a steroid kills the bacteria that fight against the infection and thus giving the ground for fungus to grow causing infection.

Symptoms

Dogs suffering from malasezzia have skin rashes, sores, itchiness, pigmentation, red patches, and hair loss. Other symptoms include greasy or scaly skin, cough, and discharge from ears, white tongue and other.

Prevention

The prevalence of yeast infection in dogs can be prevented by using high quality balanced diet, use of probiotics for maintaining the pH balance. Use of apple cider vinegar and lemon juice in dog food can control the overgrowth of yeast. Also, proper care of cleanliness and hygiene should be taken. A dog should take bath daily in a medicated shampoo. Ear, skin and feet of dogs should be completely wiped with the use of Oxy-drops to prevent infection.

Treatment

Several topical and oral medicines are available in the market for the treatment of yeast infection in dogs. Miconazole creams and Chlorohexidine shampoo are used for the treatment of yeast infection. Home remedies like acetic acid, white vinegar, and yogurt can relief from minor yeast infection symptoms. But for severe infection, there is need of effective oral medicines.
